Future Trading Forum

As perhaps the world's most economically dynamic region, the Asia-Pacific is generating increasing attention from academic, business, and policymaking circles alike. At a time when the area is projected to continue its unprecedented economic growth well into the 21st century, it is ironic that the Asia-Pacific regional institutional framework is incommensurate with developments in other parts of the world. The most ambitious attempt at regime creation in this region began in 1989 with the formation of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC). Asia-Pacific Crossroads provides a novel theoretical approach to examine the interplay of economic, political, and security factors in APEC's evolution. It focuses on the likelihood for APEC to become smoothly "nested" within the World Trade Organization and considers how subregional groupings in the Asia-Pacific might in turn become nested within APEC. The essays draw on the examples of the OECD and the EU to explore APEC's future prospects for fostering economic liberalization in the Asia-Pacific and across the globe. Asia-Pacific Crossroads offers the first rigorous and systematic theoretical and empirical examination of the APEC forum by a multinational, interdisciplinary group of scholars.

The profound effects of the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis encompass more than economic concerns. Throughout Asia Pacific the crisis prompted a reassessment of governance, values, social safety structures, the commitment of the United States to the region, and the value of such institutions as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. In this book, six authors from the region present a policy-relevant blueprint for the future by examining both past experience and current challenges.An overview chapter presents a general assessment of the social, political, economic, and cultural changes affecting the region. Forum for the Future (Bahrain 2005) - The Forum for the Future in Bahrain on 11-12 November 2005 will bring together the leaders of states of the Middle East, industrialised countries of the Group of Eight (G8) and other partners to promote political, economic and social reform in the region.
